About Semaphores.com

Preservation. The preservation of historic semaphore signals, which still exist in operation, is our main objective. Towards this goal, we are attempting to generate a comprehensive database of existing semaphores which will likely be scrapped upon removal from service. Individuals and organizations interested in obtaining and restoring semaphore signals can learn about what remains and whom to contact about potential acquisition through possible donation or outright purchase.

See History section for more preservation issues.

People. Trains, rails, and signals do not make a railroad run. The heart of both the railroad industry, and it's associated hobby, is people. For example, signal supervisors and maintainers are responsible for the safety and daily operation of rail traffic and public crossing protection. Likewise, historical preservation organizations and individuals help preserve our transportation heritage by acting on rare opportunities, whether it's rescuing a local RR station from demolition or simply photographing a vintage and dying operation. At SEMAPHORES.COM we plan on showcasing people who are making forward progress in the signal preservation arena. We also need your help to keep updated on recent events be they additions / departures in our shared semaphore database or donated information on a poorly known topic. A bulletin board will be made available to aid in the sharing of observations and information.

Products. Few remaining semaphores contain their original and undamaged glass lenses. These existing roundels or lenses often consist of cracked or faded plastic components, and thus retain none of the original sparkle and magic. The use of plastic parts on railroad semaphore signals is a far cry from the original AAR specifications and manufacturer's intent. To fill the needs of those concerned with accurate signal restoration, we offer authentic glass 8-3/8" semaphore roundels from the original manufacturer. Other items of related interest will also be available.

See the Central Store for railroad items for sale.
